Metabolaid (Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa) Helps Reduce Body Fat Mass

A recent study published on January 6, 2020 in MDPI Foods Journal claims that Metabolaid, Monteloeder’s Hibiscus sabdariffa and Lippia citriodora botanical ingredient, is effective for weight loss.

In the 12-week study conducted by Monteloeder, 84 participants showed reduced weight after consuming Metabolaid. The study used a double-blind, placebo-controlled framework. A total of 84 participants, including both males and females, were monitored through blood analysis. Parameters such as glycemic and lipidemic, and body composition were taken into account prior to the start of the research.

The abstract of the study was the following:

“A proprietary formula comprised of a blend of Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa has been recognized for its high content of polyphenols, powerful antioxidant molecules that may prevent weight gain and could be helpful for the treatment of obesity, as proven previously by in vivo models. The aim of the present study is to determine if the supplementation with Lippia citriodora and Hibiscus sabdariffa is useful for the treatment of obesity and/or weight control in subjects without a controlled diet.”

Monteloeder's product development manager, Jonathan Jones, PhD, added:

“We are delighted by the results of the Metabolaid study, which clearly demonstrates that the ingredient is effective in helping to decrease weight and reduce body fat, particularly in the abdominal area,” […] “We are particularly encouraged by the fact that these results were achieved without change to diet or physical activity, and purportedly based on the mechanism of the ingredient in regulating AMPK, an enzyme that plays an important role in cellular energy balance.”

Metabolaid has been known for its high content of polyphenols and its regulation of AMPK. Polyphenols are popular in supporting weight management while AMPK focuses on cellular energy balance. Specifically, Metabolaid focuses on regulating both the glycemic and lipid regulation in the body which, in turn, helps regulate the metabolic rate. A higher metabolic rate, the faster it is to “burn off” excess fat.

The study conducted by Monteloeder is part of the EU-funded project called INNOPREFAT. This project is part of the 2.5M euros that are awarded for research of innovative and groundbreaking ideas. Monteloeder was one of the 5% that were only granted funding for research. Here is what the researchers of the Metabolaid study concluded:

“The daily consumption of the LC-HS extract, but not the placebo, for 84 days was able to reduce body weight, BMI, and central fat mass, regardless of the physical activity. The LC-HS extract seems to affect only weight variables due to possible changes in molecular pathways, but its impact on biochemistry blood parameters such as cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides needs more study.”
