The newest generation of wireless networks, 5G, has come with a lot of public scrutiny. Consumers are questioning and voicing their concerns on MMW (millimeter wave bands) and the health risks associated with 5G towers. However, researchers from the Committee on Man and Radiation (COMAR) recently performed a study that indicates little to no ill health effects found. Even though exposure to radiofrequency waves can heat body tissues, reaching this same level of exposure would be far-reaching to get enough of the radio frequencies from a 5G wireless signal to do so.
What exactly is 5G? 5G is a fifth-generation mobile network, a network designed with higher performance and efficiency improvements that can connect virtually everyone and everything, including devices, machines, and objects. 5G provides ultra-low latency, reliability, and massive network capacity. With extensive public demands for faster internet wireless services, 5G networks are an answer to this demand and making it practically a necessity. After all, with its increased bandwidth and higher frequency signals, capable of offering more multi-Gbps peak data at faster speeds. To make sure that this level of service is available to everyone, “beamforming” antennas are used to direct the millimeter-wave (MMW) bands to a specific device. Most antennas broadcast the signal everywhere around it, but objects like trees and buildings can cause it to be blocked and have weakened signals.
So, how exactly did everyone become so misinformed about what 5G technology is? The internet, already enriched with different websites that state the dangers that MMW (millimeter wave bands) allegedly causes, even saying that there are possible diseases that can come from overexposure. At this point, scientists believe that the cause of this spread of “unnecessary public anxiety” can be traced back to the misinformation from websites that are hosted by self-proclaimed activists. COMAR vice-chairman Jerrold T. Bushberg remarked,
“This misinformation together with activist websites expressing even more ominous consequences of 5G – ranging from cancer induction to being responsible for the current coronavirus pandemic – has created substantial and unnecessary public anxiety.”
Even while activist websites rumors are circulating, both the vice-chairman and the rest of the research team state that there’s no way for MMWs to go further than the outermost layer of the skin. In a statement from COMAR, the researchers stated, “[We judge] the likelihood of yet unknown health hazards at exposure levels within current limits to be very low, if they exist at all.” and COMAR adds “these waves are actually less effective at passing through buildings, trees, and your skin compared to lower-frequency signals.” Along with the researchers, the report was also a collaboration between several scientists, engineers, biologists, and doctors.
The public is already exposed to radiofrequency waves daily, though the exposure is low. With 5G added to the waves, the scientists believe that this exposure won’t ultimately increase in health hazards. The majority of nations around the world already have limits to what amounts of RF exposure the public are exposed to, and those limits are far below what could cause tissue damage or even cancer. As long as RF stays below the set limits, the health effects are minimal.
Given how new 5G wireless communications network technology is, there is quite a bit of ranging literature one can stumble upon online. Here are a few key questions that can help understand the risks of 5G radiation and whether or not is high-powered WiFi signal speeds will have any health side effects.
According to HowToGeek, “Some 5G conspiracy theorists contend that the new network generates radiofrequency radiation that can damage DNA and lead to cancer. Cause oxidative damage that can cause premature aging; disrupt cell metabolism, and potentially lead to other diseases through the generation of stress proteins.” However, with this latest study by scientists, doctors, and engineers found, to order to cause any harm to the human body from RF exposure is almost impossible, and only affects the outermost layer of the skin.
Limit the time you spend using these devices. Instead of placing the phone in your pocket, place it in your bag or briefcase. Consider placing the devices away from your body, even when you're asleep. Place computers, phones, your routers, and other devices away from your body as much as possible.
According to Wikipedia, “The term “massive MIMO” was coined by Nokia Bell Labs researcher Dr. Thomas L. Marzetta in 2010, and has been launched in 4G networks, such as Softbank in Japan.”
If you are worried and want to protect yourself from cell phone radiation, there are effective measures you can take instead of this option. Because radiation blocking cell phone cases do not work 100%, they can only minimize the dangers of radiation.
